Our History Spans More than 100 Years of Secure Tomorrows.
Transamerica's history is more than just a series of dates. It's a testament to our successful track record as one of the nation's largest and oldest life insurance companies. If stability and reliability are important to you in choosing a life insurance company (and they should be), you're in the right place.
Transamerica started out as a small bank, opening its doors in a converted San Francisco saloon five years before the start of the Spanish-American War. It was the vision of young entrepreneur A. P. Giannini. He named it the Bank of Italy. Years later, it would become the Bank of America.

Giannini's vision also included offering other financial services. The opportunity to put that plan into action came in 1930 with the acquisition of Occidental Life Insurance Company. That addition—and the estimated $25 million in assets that came with it—created a solid foundation for future growth. It also created a mission for us: to be the maker of a secure Tomorrow for millions of customers.
In 1956, Congress passed the Bank Holding Company Act, which prohibited companies from owning both banking and nonbanking entities. It was a strategic fork in the road for Transamerica. We chose to divest our bank holdings in favor of our core life insurance businesses and related services. After that, we just kept growing.
In 1972, the 48-story Transamerica Pyramid went up in the heart of San Francisco's financial district. It's not only a city landmark, but also an enduring icon for Transamerica. In 1999, Transamerica became part of one of the world's leading financial services organizations—AEGON N.V. And in 2012, Transamerica began our support of the active lifestyle community, sponsoring several running races and endurance events. Transamerica continues to expand our support by establishing strong partnerships such as with Life Time Fitness and the Competitor Group, as well as launching activetransamerica.com - an innovative website offering products and services specifically geared to those living an active lifestyle.
